I. IMACFORD background and objectives

Improving and Advancing Co-ordination of Forest Research and Development in Europe (IMACFORD) is an Accompanying Measure to the EU 5th Framework Programme. The overall objective of this Accompanying Measure is to improve existing and develop new networking facilities in European forest research, and to adapt existing research structures to meet the new demands.

One of the tasks included in IMACFORD deals with future forest research in the Mediterranean area. It involves a series of five workshops.

Workshop 1:

The objective of the workshop:

To discuss how are the trade-offs currently addressed by different disciplines and how are they communicated to end-users

The questions that should be answered:

Q.1    How the co-operation among researchers (from different research fields) and between researchers and end users can be improved?

Q.2    Which are the most relevant topics of social concern in relation to Mediterranean forests?

Q.3    How the communication to end-users and the usefulness of the research results can be improved?

Working methods:

To achieve the objective and to develop a broad discussion among the participants, group process working methods should be used (different participatory methods like: H-method, Pair ranking and neutral scoring).

The expected results of the workshop:

1.      A list with proposals for the improvement of co-operation among researchers and between researchers and end-users (aprox. 10 proposals);

2.      A list with proposals for the improvement of the communication to the end-users and the usefulness of the research results (aprox. 10 proposals);

3.      A list of the 5 most relevant topics.
