I. IMACFORD background and objectives

Improving and Advancing Co-ordination of Forest Research and Development in Europe (IMACFORD) is an Accompanying Measure to the EU 5th Framework Programme. The overall objective of this Accompanying Measure is to improve existing and develop new networking facilities in European forest research, and to adapt existing research structures to meet the new demands.

One of the tasks included in IMACFORD deals with future forest research in the Mediterranean area. It involves a series of five workshops.

Workshop 1:

Barcelona, Saturday November 16, 2002

Objectives

To discuss what are the trade-offs involved in sustainable Mediterranean forests relevant to end-users of different nature and in different regions

Deliverables

Interim report (Month 3)

Venue

Fundació Catalana per la Recerca, Passeig. Lluís Companys, 23, 08010 Barcelona, Spain

Workshop 2:

Lisbon, Monday-Tuesday December 2-3, 2002

Objectives

To discuss how the trade-offs are currently perceived by users

Deliverables

Interim report, (Month 3)

Workshop 3:

Avignon, Friday Januray 31, 2003

Workshop 4:

Place to be decided, April 11 and 12, 2003??

Objectives

To discuss how scientific approaches can take into account the perceived trade-offs, co-operate and improve the usefulness of the results

Deliverables

Interim report (Month 7)

Venue

Final workshop:

Place to be decided, May 30 and 31, 2003??

Objectives

To wrap up the previous work and plan dissemination, involving researchers, end-users, and other interested observers.

Deliverables

Final report (Month 10)

Venue

Workshops 1 and 2 will address topics such as:

1)      The identification of the most relevant trade-offs for sustainable Mediterranean forests as identified by stake-holders, especially by researchers and end-users

2)      A list of specific features of Mediterranean forest trade-offs

3)      A proposal for research and communication among Mediterranean countries, research institutions and end-users

4)      A proposal for establishing a more formal relationship between Mediterranean research and the research from other European regions

5)      A list of the main differences between research and research needs from the end-users perspective

6)      The agenda for future workshops

II. ISA Program background and objectives

ISA has developed a research and outreach strategy with the aim of building and disseminating the use of forest resources decision support tools that may promote the forest sector development. The institutional arrangement designed to confront some structural problems and to sustain that strategy involved the participation of a wide range of end users. In this workshop, the strategy objectives are characterized and its results are summarized. A reference is made to its integration within an European level strategy designed at the European Forest Institute Mediterranean Regional Project Centre (MEDFOREX). Finally, future research and outreach work to promote forest resources sustainable management is briefly addressed.
