2nd Advanced Course
Innovative and integrated approaches, methods and tools
for Mediterranean forest ecosystem management
COURSE BACKGROUND
Venue
Solsona (Spain), 16.April — 27.April 2007
Objectives
of the course
Over the past 10 years forest management decision-making has rapidly evolved in
order to address the multifunctional and complex nature of forest ecosystems
through the combination of forestry, ecological, economic and policy principles
as
well as the use of modern computing technology. The objective of the course is
to improve the knowledge of students from Syria, Tunisia and Lebanon on
Mediterranean forest ecosystem management. The newest approaches, methods,
techniques and tools on forest management and economics will be explained and
demonstrated.
The course
contents will have a fundamentally applied orientation and will explore
technical aspects or particular methodologies in depth. They will provide a
high-level updating of knowledge, which will be complemented by the opportunity
to exchange experiences within an international framework with the lecturing
experts.
Specific topics,
which will be addressed in the course include, among others:

Mediterranean forest inventory and modelling techniques,
-
multi-objective forest planning models,
-
computer tools to support forest planning,
-
main forest economic principles and techniques,
-
methods for valuing forest goods and services, and
-
design and implementation of forest policies.
Case studies
using advanced computer tools will be included to illustrate the use of modern
techniques and tools in relation to the covered topics.
Admission
The course caters for a maximum of 20-22 participants, which should be Master
students or last year Graduate students, from the MEDFOREM project partners:

University of Tishreen, Syria

University of Aleppo, Syria

National Institute of Agronomy of Tunisia (INAT), Tunisia
-
Institut National de Recherches en Génie Rural, Eaux et Forêt (INRGREF),
Tunisia
-
Lebanese University, Lebanon
A good knowledge
of English language is required to follow the course.
A first
pre-selection will be performed by the home institutions, while the final
selection will be after interviews of the candidates by the project Coordinator
and Experts.
Organization
The course will take place at the premises of the Forest Technology Centre of
Catalonia (CTFC) located in Solsona (Spain) and will
be given by qualified lecturers from research centres and universities. The
course will be held over a period of approximately 2 weeks in April 2007. More
detailed information will be provided to the selected participants.
Scholarships
The
MEDFOREM Joint European Project will cover the travel and accommodation
expenses of the selected participants.
