2nd Advanced Course

Innovative and integrated approaches, methods and tools for Mediterranean forest ecosystem management

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is structured in two weeks:

  • two introductory days devoted to present and discuss the main challenges and threats, as well as the multiple functions and non-wood products provided by Mediterranean forests;
  • one week of advanced lectures and practical exercises on forest management and planning (including Saturday lectures and Sunday field trip to forests in the region; and
  • one week of advanced lectures and practical exercises on forest economics.

Lectures will be innovative, presenting the latest development of knowledge in their respective fields, as the objective of the course is to upgrade the level of the knowledge of attendants.

Structure and contents of the MEDFOREM course

1.The multiple functions of Mediterranean forests, and the rationale for their integration in SFM.
1.1 Introduction: Science and Forest: achievements, evolution and challenges, with particular reference to the Mediterranean 
1.2. Climate change and Mediterranean forests

1.3. International debates on environmental issues related to forestry

 

2. Mediterranean forest management and planning
2.1. Introduction to Mediterranean forest management and planning
2.2. Forest inventory and growth and yield modeling
2.3. Quantitative approaches to multi-objective forest planning
2.4. Decision support systems in forest planning
2.5. Forest landscape planning

 

3. Mediterranean forest economics
3.1. Principles of microeconomics
3.2. Forest economics
3.3. Cost-benefit analysis

3.4. Forest valuation techniques
